In terms of epic journeys, perhaps only two instantly spring to mind as absolute must-see essentials. Both are literary and legendary, so it is possible to live either vicariously, but why not see it all with your own eyes – or walk the route with your own feet?

The first, a journey described by Jason Goodwin in On Foot to the Golden Horn: A Walk to Istanbul, involves reaching the former Byzantine capital of Constantinople, or modern-day Istanbul, in a fashion befitting of bygone Byzantine times… on foot. Tracing Goodwin’s journey, the starting point would be Poland and from that point the journey would involve six months of sleeping on haystacks and wearing through walking shoes throughout Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. Goodwin undertook his journey in 1990, so he also passed through the now-defunct Czechoslovakia, and his account of his trip is fascinating not only as light-weight travel literature. He provides a fascinating historical survey of the region and a social overview of either stasis or change in small villages and city centres, intertwined with humorous reflections of the arduous and at times ludicrous endeavour.

The second trip, a little bit more accommodating in terms of creature comforts, would have to be a self drive USA or self drive Canada auto tour holiday. Can you imagine it?
