It is an administrative centre of Strumyani Municipality. The main part (80%) of the total municipal area is mountainous and covers parts of Pirin Mountain and Maleshevska Mountain. The rest of the territory is located on the banks of the Strouma River where the land is arable. The mountainous relief of the municipality is characterised by picturesque rocks and caves. The climate is typical transitional Mediterranean. Winters are mild, the average temperature in January is 2.5oC. Summer is the longest season (dry and warm) and the average temperature in July is 24oC. Autumn is long and warm.
