The village of Stoilovo is located northeast of the town of Malko Tarnovo, on a high and bare mountain ridge, which serves as a natural divide of the Veleka and Ai dere (Bear’s river) Rivers. The name of the village derives from the first name of its first settler – old man Stoil. It is believed that the village is one of the oldest settlements in Strandja – it is probably 400 years old. According to some legends old man Stoil and his family were the first settlers in the area. When he moved there, Stoil was followed by men and women from the neighboring villages Yurta and Veleka, as one of the main roads to Constantinople passed through the settlements and that caused troubles. In these years an outbreak of malaria in these settlements forced the native born to leave their homes and settle some place else. Nowadays the village of Stoilovo treasures a number of old Strandjan houses.
