The memorial Birth of Christ near the town of Shipka
The town of Shipka is located in South Central Bulgaria (Stara Zagora District) immediately to the south under the Shipka Pass and Mt. Stoletov, 12 km on a road from the town of Kazanluk, to which it is connected by a regular bus transport. The town was established 630 years ago in order to protect and support the pass. The hills were overgrown with dog-roses, that’s where the name of the town comes from (Shipka meaning wild rose). One of the most important battles for the liberation of Bulgaria took place on the peak of Shipka. A lots of the houses in town of Shipka are more than 130 years old. There are great monuments near in the area of Shipka - Birth of Christ Memorial Church (in honour to the heroes of the Russian-Turkish War of Liberation of 1877-1878 - Russian soldiers and Bulgarian volunteers), The Memorial of Freedom, Buzludzha memorial, etc.
