Zlatograd is only 3 km (1.8 miles) from the Bulgaria-Greece border, situated along the Varbitza River between the East and West ranges of the Rhodope mountains. Here the summer is hot, with temperatures around 38-40°C, while the winter is mild and often with no snow. People say the name was given because of the golden colour of the tobacco (zlato means gold in Bulgaria) leaves grown in this part of the Rhodopi. The town is a small with numerous nice houses (about 60). Its citizens are friendly, humble and easy-going. Although Zlatograd is a very old town, it has borne its name only since 1934. This is the birhplace of the famous national hero Deljo haidutin.
