It is center of Rakovski municipality. It is situated south from the Stara Planina mountain in in the western part of the Upper Thracian Lowland, 25 km away from city Plovdiv. The town was founded in 1966 by the merger of three villages General Nikolaev, and Sekirovo Parchevich. Town of Rakovski is by far the largest predominantly Roman Catholic town in Bulgaria, with the vast majority of the population professing Roman Catholicism. It is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sofia and Plovdiv. There are several Roman Catholic churches, a nunnery and a monastery in the town. The catholic church `Sacred Heart` in Rakovski is the second largest in the Balkans after the cathedral of Zagreb.
