Region of Velingrad, BulgariaMunicipality of Velingrad is located in the Western part of the Rodopi mountains and covers an area of 818 sq. km. The municipality comprises of regional center Velingrad (133 km away from Sofia, 81 km away from Plovdiv and 196 km away from Smolyan) and 18 villages including 35 settlements.
The region of Velingrad is mountainous (the average altitude is 1,300 m.) with rich forest fund that occupies 657,619 decares (81.9 % of the total territory of the municipality). Representatives of the flora are the following species: belladona, centaury, thistle, etc.
There are 28 thermal water springs with temperatures of 18-86°C and capacity of 120 l/sec. There are over 40 operating sanatoriums and spa-hotels, 11 hot mineral water complexes with 14 pools and beaches.
