The Municipality of Momchilgrad is spread on one of the parts of the Eastern Rodopi Mountains -the so called "Stramni Rid" (Precipitous Slope) and between the rivers "Varbitza", "Nanovishka reka" and the dam lake "Studen Kladenetz" (Cold Well). The municipality covers an area of 360,027 sq. km. From administrative-legal point of view it is located in Kardzhali region and has common borders with the municipalities of Kardzhali, Dzhebel, Kirkovo and Krumovgrad. The municipality comprises its center, the town of Momchilgrad, and 48 settlements of area of 30 villages. The town of Momchilgrad serves as a natural crossroad in the region. The relief is mountainous. Forest Fund covers 160,899 decares, and most of them are broad-leaved trees. The climate is mild-continental and Mediterranean; Area of Momchilgrad is relatively polluted in the area of the two asphalt based on the railway station of Dzhebel. A water-treatment plant should be built there. There is a great variety of natural sites of interest - reserves, caves, etc. The "Borovetz" reserve (36 hectares) is a typical forest black pine-trees reserve; another natural phenomenon is "Vkamenenata Gora" (`Petrified Forest`), which is 7.3 hectares. The `Red Book of Bulgaria` contains representatives of the flora like Anthemis cotula, Sapunaria officinalis, etc.
