The Chernoochene municipality is located in South-Central Bulgaria in the eastern Rhodopes. It is the only completely rural municipality in Kardzhali District. The Municipality is the entrance gate to the Rhodopes. Its territory is crossed by important roads going into the central part of Bulgaria. It is at a distance of 100 km from the state borders with the Republic of Turkey and the Hellenic Republic.
The region has rich culture and has established a steady tradition in civilized coexistence of ethnic groups and different religions. In the Gradishte locality numerous archeological finds have been discovered - religious items, work tools, a unique collection of 57 clay and marble idols, copper plastic art of the Thracian Horseman; remains of a mediaeval military fortress. There are also megalith Thracian monuments - rock niches, tombs and "sharapans" - rock tombs in the Gouzgoun Kaya locality.
Borovitsa Dam Lake is located on the territory of the Municipality Chernoochene. It is the largest one for potable water in the Eastern Rhodopes. Here is also the Zhenda state game-breeding unit; mouflon, wild boar, roes and deer are found in it. Wonderful conditions have been established for development of hunting tourism.
