The town of Svilengrad (55 m above sea-level) is situated on the banks of the Maritsa River, in the immediate proximity to the touching point of three state boundaries, namely Bulgarian-Greek, Bulgarian-Turkish and Greek-Turkish.
It is about 70 km south-east of Haskovo, 150 km from Plovdiv , and 300 km from Sofia, 2 km north of the boundary with Greece, and 14 km north-west to the boundary with Turkey, 30 km and 265 km north-west of Odrin (Edirne) and Istanbul. Svilengrad is one of the gates to Bulgaria.
The town is founded on the ruins of a Thracian settlement. In the close vicinity the late-antiquity Bourdipta wayside station is built, through which the Roman road from Philippopolis (Plovdiv) to Adrianople (Odrin) passed.
The Ancient Bridge built in 1529 is the symbol of Svilengrad. It is an unigue outfit for its time.And in nowadays the Bridge aver Maritza River usth its twelve vault arches is one of the most remarkable monuments in southeastern Europe.It dates from the Ottoman rule.
