History: The name of the village has Slavic origin and is derived from a bush "tran" ("thorn"). In the area of the village was found several archaeological findings, showing that the first inhabitants of the region were settled here as early as the age of neolite (Copper-Stone Age). Later, the Thracians founded a large settlement there. There are remnants of clay vessels resembling Thracian culture from this time. There were found also drawings of the honor from the Thracian gods Hilia and Telesphor.
Sightseeing: There are Memorial of Died for the Liberation of Bulgaria. Next to it is the situated the village church - one of the oldest churches in the northwestern Bulgaria. Around Tarnava were found more than 40 Thracian burial mounds, and nine of them - the largest - are situated together and arranged in a circle.
