It is center of Makresh municipality. Neighbour villages are Valchek, Tsar Shishmanovo and Tolovitsa. Makresh is at distance of 6 km. from the main road E79 Vidin - Montana. Vidbol River passes through the village and 5km in West direction is situated dam of .Rabisha (suitable for fishing).

History: The name of the village comes from the Latin word "macro" (large). The legend tells the name was given when the was passed by an Italian explorer. He liked the village and staying there. He gave his name - "Makres" - long / big village.
