The Montana municipality occupies an area of 647.6 sq. km, which constitutes 17.8 % of the territory of the District of Montana. The relief is mostly hilly. It includes parts of the Fore-Balkan and very small parts of the Danube Hilly Plain and the Balkan mountain range. The shortest road from Northwest to Southwest Bulgaria passes through the Montana municipality, and so does the road from Western Europe via the ferryboat by the town of Vidin and the harbour in the town of Lom to South Bulgaria and the Middle East. The town of Montana is a district centre under the present administrative division. There are 23 settlements in the municipality.
