The Village of Bulgarene is located in North-Western Bulgaria. It is part of Lovech Municipality.
The exact year of the foundation of the village of Balgarene is not known. Despite that fact, experts believe that the region of the village has not been uninhabited even in the Antiquity. The proximity of an old Roman road and a small Roman fortress (the hill on which it once stood is now known by the name Kulata) speak of liveliness and trading as well as military presence in the region.
The name Balgarene derives from the fact that all of the inhabitants of the settlement were Bulgarians. Like good Renaissance people the inhabitants of Balgarene created a lyceum, a library and built a school. During the national liberation struggles for overruling the Turkish power the people from Balgarene participate actively in all events that took place in the region. One of the most desperate struggles during the Russian-Turkish war was held in the village. The people helped the Russian solders as much as they possibly could.
