The Veliki Preslav Municipality is located in Northeastern Bulgaria, in the southwestern part of Shoumen District. The relief is varied. In the northern and southwestern part it is hilly and low mountainous. The central part is flat, with the Goliama Camchia River and its tributary, the Varna River, running though it. The northern part includes the southern parts of the Shoumen Plateau with an altitude of 300 m to 400 m above sea level. Region of Veliki Preslav is known for its beautiful and clean environment and its abundant cultural-historical heritage. The beautiful locations and the numerous archaeological monuments attract many lovers of cognitive tourism. There are 9.68 sq.km of protected areas in the municipality (reserves and buffer zones, national parks and historic sites). The capital of the First Bulgarian Kingdom is to the south of the present day town Veliki Preslav. Patleina Natural Reserve, situated near Veliki Preslav, and Dervisha Reserve are the only places where wild carob, horse chestnut and Urumov tulip /Tulipa urumoffii/ grow. There is a big hunting farm, where one can see muflons, doe, wild boar, fallow deer, red deer. The Loddon lily /Galanthus nivalis L var. gracilis/ fields near Kochovo with an area of 0.12 sq.km and near Osmar with an area of 0.19 sq.km are protected areas and the only ones in Northern Bulgaria.
