The town of Lyaskovets (Veliko Turnovo District) is located in North-Central Bulgaria and is center of Lyaskovets Municipality. The town is situated in the beginning of the Fore-Balkan (Elena Balkan), eastern from the Arbanasi ridge, under the cliff upon which is the monastery St. St. Petar and Pavel, 10 km north-eastern from Veliko Tarnovo, 2 km south-eastern from Gorna Oryahovitsa and 5 km southern from Yantra river. It is opened to east and north to the valley of Yantra river. The name Lyaskovets comes from the word leska (`hazel`) or leshnik (`hazelnut`), because the tree was abundant in the area. The region has been inhabited since the 4th millennium BC, but grew as an important Bulgarian settlement in the Middle Ages, during the Second Bulgarian Empire, because of its proximity to the capital fortress of Veliko Tarnovo.
