The town of Belene (Pleven district) is located in North - Central Bulgaria on the right bank of the Danube river close to town of Svishtov. Belene is best known for the prison on Belene Island where in the comunist past of Bulgaria opponents of the official regime were exiled. Other pecularity of the region is that Belene is the proposed site of Bulgaria`s second nuclear power plant (after this near Kozluduy). The main confessions in the town are Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy and there are two Roman Catholic and one Orthodox church in Belene.
